Day 310: Bee Orchid

I manage to track down a handful (figure of speech – they’re still on-site at Gypsy Marsh) of these spectacular flowers this evening, and spent a much longer time than I would have imagined trying to get shots that did them justice.

The resemblance of the Ophrys apifera to bumblebees is not without purpose: bees land on the flower intending to mate with them, and leave disappointed, but carrying pollen on their backs.
