Day 43: Dragonfly porn

Today I really pushed the boundaries (of the 18-270, and politeness) to see just how close you could really get by adding a close-up dioptre. Turns out, you can get pretty close. There has been no cropping of this image at all.

I haven’t gone down the extension tube route with this lens, because I think that the minimum aperture of f/5.6 would be too limiting. I opted for a +3 magnifier, which trims down the working distance without cutting out any available light. I’m really impressed by the results (worth remembering I only paid £20 for the dioptre). For a subject of this size, it’s quite a workable solution (particularly as you wouldn’t normally want to get this close anyway).

I think it’s fair to say that there’s no reason that this lens can’t cover all of your bases in a pinch.
